Mt Eden Corrections Facility

Increasing capacity at Mt Eden Corrections Facility

Mt Eden was seen as a preferred site to meet the demand for additional prisoner places, being a remand prison it is in close proximity to a number of Auckland courts. The increase in prison numbers is largely in the upper North Island. Construction of the new accommodation block (Building C) is being managed by Leighs Construction Limited. Construction will commence from mid-April 2017 and is expected to be complete by late 2019. MECF will continue to be fully operational while construction is taking place.

Construction of Building C was originally planned in 2010 when the Government approved the project and the earthworks were prepared onsite. However the building was not constructed as the extra capacity wasn’t required due to a flattening in remand prison numbers at the time. The design of the accommodation block remains unchanged from when it was approved by the Auckland (City) Council in 2009.

Building C will house an additional 245 remand prisoners and be located within the existing Southern boundary of the MECF site. The multi-storey, high security building will include programme rooms, multipurpose spaces, staff facilities, AVL facilities, visiting rooms and a satellite health facility.

Also underway at MECF is the repurposing of an existing building for the Auckland Police Custody Unit. This project is being managed by the Police and involves the Custody Unit being relocated from the Auckland Central Police Station. The new Custody unit at MECF will enable Corrections and the Police to work more efficiently together to manage Police detainees through the custodial management system.
