Bay of Plenty residential service
Ara Poutama Aotearoa – Department of Corrections is establishing a housing and support service at 240 Rangiuru Road, Te Puke for men who are serving a community sentence / order, including some who may be coming out of a Corrections facility. The service will start small before scaling up to offer places for up to 15 men. Residents will receive 24-7 on-site support from experienced service provider staff, who will work alongside probation officers and other local Community Corrections staff to set them up for success.
Community engagement
Over the past two years we have been engaging with Tapuika Iwi Authority, hapū members, the local community and key stakeholders regarding the establishment of this service.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the many engagement opportunities over this time. It has been really valuable to hear from everyone and we appreciate this has taken longer than expected, mainly due to the impact of COVID.
We heard that the community mostly supports how the service would make a difference in the lives of people looking to return to the Bay of Plenty after serving a sentence.
Through the engagement process we have listened to the concerns raised by the community. We understand those concerns and have worked through mitigations, such as:
- priority placement for men with Tapuika whakapapa into the service to ensure it is local men who benefit
- a limited number of men for the first twelve months to ensure the service is scaled up appropriately
- opportunities for iwi to input into the service
- security cameras on the property
- the establishment of a Community Liaison Group to ensure local people continue to have a voice within the service
Next steps
If you wish to be part of the Community Liaison Group please contact bopengagement@corrections.govt.nz
We will be working with the service provider on the set up of the service. It’s likely the first men won’t be onsite until April 2023 at the earliest.
