All prisoners must have completed a health screening assessment to ensure that they can safely participate in physical recreation activities.
The unit PCO must be advised by Health Services of the prisoners ability to participate in physical recreation activities.
F.13.01 Prisoner application to participate in physical activities
The prisoner must apply, in writing by completing all of section A of the F.13.Form.01 Application by prisoner to engage in physical recreation activity. Note: Prisoners are encouraged to complete this form as part of the initial unit reception if they wish to participate in any physical activity.
The Prisoner’s File Notes is updated to show that a request has been received by the prisoner to participate in physical recreation activities’.
The case officer must review the completed Health Information (OMM.3.F5 Health Information to Unit Staff / Sentence Planners) before completing section B of F.13.Form.01 Application by prisoner to engage in physical recreation activity.
The case officer must complete section B of F.13.Form.01 Application by prisoner to engage in physical recreation activity and attach (OMM.3.F5 Health Information to Unit Staff / Sentence Planners), then forward the application to the unit PCO for their decision.
The unit PCO completes section C of F.13.Form.01 Application by prisoner to engage in physical recreation activity, and returns the application with their decision to the case officer.
F.13.02 Unit PCO approves application
The case officer advises prisoner of the unit PCO's decision, and provides information booklets printed by ACC.
Where the unit PCO has approved the prisoner participation in physical recreation activity the case officer must provide to the prisoner information booklets from relevant sporting bodies (i.e. NZRU, NZRL) in respect to contact sport.
The Prisoner File Notes is updated and the application is placed on the prisoner’s file under category B.
F.13.03 Incident and review
The case officer is to undertake on-going monitoring of the appropriateness of the prisoner continuing and, or participating in physical recreation activities.
All prisoners will be reassessed as to their suitability to participate in physical activity if they report any health problems during exercise, or if health staff consider it necessary.
Prison staff must report all prisoner physical activity related accidents and update the site database.
The unit PCO can review the prisoners participation in any physical activity when ever they consider the behaviour of the prisoner inappropriate.
