13.7 Protective Custody (Segregation)
The number of males in protective custody (i.e., segregated) has climbed steadily over the last decade, from 428 to 989, ranging between 12 to 20 percent of male sentenced inmates since 1991. Few female inmates require, or seek, segregation from their fellow inmates: at the time of the 2003 census only four female inmates were being managed under this condition.
