13.8 Previous Sentences

See Section 17.2 for a discussion of how the term “sentence” is defined for census purposes. When counting “previous” sentences, all sentences relating to the current custodial period are excluded.

For females, 34 percent of the currently sentenced inmates had not previously been sentenced. This was up from 25 percent in 1999.

The proportion of male sentenced inmates who had not previously been sentenced increased from 17 percent in 1999 to 22 percent in 2003.
