9.2 Living with Children

Figures in relation to inmates’ children was drawn largely from IOMS data entered during inmate induction interviews, with additional information gathered on census day (for more information on data collection issues, see Section 17 below). Of interest was the number of inmates who were caring for dependent children prior to entering prison.

Thirty five percent of female and twelve percent of male sentenced inmates were recorded as having child custodial dependents at the time of their imprisonment.

Note that the data relates to the number of inmates and not to children. For example, there were 112 sentenced inmates who each had three child custodial dependents at the time of imprisonment.
